3 Tips to get found online

Written by Joanne Higgs

SEO is a minefield but if your business has a website, you should be thinking about it. There are lots of great experts out there who can help you to improve your SEO and I would recommend getting professional help with this. However, if you are a small business starting out and want to understand a few things about SEO then here are my top 3 tips.

1. Graphic designer Bishop’s Stortford.

Let’s start at the beginning. Load up the search engine, what is your starting point? Think about how many people will be specifically searching for YOU. If I want people to find me, then searching ‘Graphic designer’ is going to be too generic, there are millions of us. There is no way this is going help me to get found. How can I combat this and be found by my desired audience? I could choose a niche for my business, ‘Graphic design branding’ or ‘Graphic designer beauty logo’s’ etc.

Another way is by location, by adding the location you want to attract, you are creating a less generic search option. I live in a town called Bishop’s Stortford, so ‘Graphic designer Bishop’s Stortford’ or ‘Graphic designer Hertfordshire’ makes sense as it is people local to me who would search for this. When you have worked out the most likely search words for your business, include these key phases in your website as often as you can without reducing the quality of your copy.

2. Put your business on Google Business.

This is a straightforward one. Google loves location-based information. You go to ‘Google business’ fill out the required information and add your address. So, when someone looks up your business geographically you will pop up on the map ‘Graphic designer Bishop’s Stortford.’ This is great if your business is static, a butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker… you get the idea. This is where ‘Graphic designer Bishop’s Stortford’ helps me out again.

3. Title: Graphic Designer Bishop’s Stortford.

It’s all in the title. Well, it is a little bit more complicated than simply putting your key phrases in the titles, but Google will pick up your titles before the sub-text based on importance. So put some thought into what you have in your titles. Look at your website and your ‘titles’ to see if you can make them more relevant to your key word searches.
